$2 Million Towards Burnie's West Park Sports Facility

Anthony Albanese, Minister for Infrastructure and Local Government, and Nick Sherry, Minister for Superannuation and Corporate Law, have announced that the Rudd Labor Government will offer $2 million towards the new sports facility at Burnie in North West Tasmania.

Minister Sherry made the announcement in Burnie with the Member for Braddon, Sid Sidebottom, and Mayor of Burnie City Council, Alwyn Boyd.

This funding is part of the Rudd Government's $800 million Community Infrastructure Program - the largest one-off investment in local infrastructure in Australia's history.

Through our economic stimulus plan, we are investing in projects such as this to support local jobs and economies during the global recession.

Across Australia, this program will invest in community and sporting facilities to create jobs and stimulate local economies.

The project, which is being managed by Burnie City Council, will reconstruct the West Park Sports Facility in Burnie.

The West Park Sports Facility will be a modern and purpose-built recreational resource for the Burnie community and Tasmania's North West region.

The planned project is expected to include:

  •  a three-level modern construction, with indoor training facilities, offices for sporting bodies, and a fully equipped function centre;

  •  corporate boxes on the mezzanine level overlooking the ground; and

  •  facilities for a number of football, cricket, cycling and athletic clubs, as well as community groups.

The funding announced today builds on the $235,000 we have already delivered for a local infrastructure projects in the Burnie City Council area.

It brings our investment in Burnie City Council community infrastructure to $2.2 million this year.

Nearly 70 per cent of the stimulus plan is infrastructure, including more than 3,000 projects funded under the Government's Community Infrastructure Program across Australia to support jobs and benefit communities.
