$8.9 Million For Rockhampton Infrastructure And Services

Anthony Albanese, Minister for Infrastructure and Local Government, and the Member for Capricornia, Kirsten Livermore, today announced $8,925,747 in Financial Assistance Grants for Rockhampton Regional Council in this financial year.

Mr Albanese was in Rockhampton today with Ms Livermore and Mayor of Rockhampton, Brad Carter.

“The Rudd Labor Government is supporting local communities by funding important local infrastructure and services,” Mr Albanese said.

“We are providing record funding to local governments to improve local roads, provide libraries, sports grounds, swimming pools, community centres and other services.

“Across Queensland, the Rudd Labor Government is delivering $378 million in Financial Assistance Grants to local councils in 2009-10.

“The grant is on top of our Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program (more than $5 million to Rockhampton since November 2008) and our Roads to Recovery program (more than $1.6 million in 2009-10).”

Ms Livermore said, “I am really pleased that Rockhampton residents will benefit from this funding. The Council will be able to spend its grant on local priorities to deliver roads and services for our community.

“Rockhampton residents expect good local roads, decent libraries, well-maintained parks, regular garbage pick-ups, and high quality child care and other services.”

Mr Albanese said, “To help Rockhampton deal with the effects of the global recession, the Rudd Government brought forward $2,170,396 of Rockhampton’s 2009-10 grant and provided it to the council in June.”

The level of Financial Assistance Grant for each Queensland council was recommended by the Queensland Local Government Grants Commission, a body established under Queensland legislation.

Rockhampton will receive its quarterly Financial Assistance Grant payment this week.
