Constitutional Recognition Of Local Government

Today I met with my State and Territory counterparts to discuss the inclusion of local government in the Constitution.
I reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to giving local government recognition in the Constitution.
I've been pleased that my colleagues are prepared to be constructive.
A successful referendum is important for our local communities.
Every Australian is touched by local government in day to day life. The Commonwealth Government has partnered with local government to build roads, bridges, sporting centres, libraries and other community infrastructure and need to keep investing securely into the future.
We also understand and respect that local government is governed by state laws, the States have primary governance responsibility and the referendum question must reflect this.
