Funding For Mount Druitt Community Resource Hub

The Rudd Labor Government will provide $4 million to build a new multipurpose community resource centre at Mount Druitt in Sydney’s west.

I made the announcement in Mount Druitt today.

This project is worth a total of $8 million and is expected to support 35 jobs during construction , as well as another five jobs over the longer term.

This is about creating jobs in the local economy today while delivering lasting benefits for the community.

Mount Druitt is an area of significant social disadvantage and the community resource hub is about providing support to those people who need it the most.

The new hub will also focus on providing access to community services and programs for local Indigenous people.

The Blacktown City Council project, is expected to include:

  • Construction of a second floor on the existing Mount Druitt Branch Library and Senior Citizens Centre to nearly double its size to 3,900 square metres;

  • Create new training and meeting rooms which will be able to host homework facilities for children, small business and TAFE outreach courses, support and counselling services as well as house community organisations;

  • Expansion of the library space to provide more computer access through reconfiguration of the ground floor; and

  • Use of energy efficient and sustainable construction materials.

The funding is part of our Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program, which is delivering a record $1 billion for nearly 5,000 projects across the nation.

Across Australia, we are building and modernising community facilities, including town halls, libraries, community centres and sports grounds.

The Government is partnering with local government to support the economy while building community infrastructure for the future.

The funding is conditional upon the council formalising a contract with the Government and meeting relevant conditions.
