Home Run For Kele Park Softball

Today, Anthony Albanese, Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, officially opened the refurbished Softball Facility at Kele Park in Rockhampton.

Mr Albanese was at Kele Park with the Member for Capricornia, Kirsten Livermore.

“Kele Park is a great community facility for children and young people and it supports professional softball players competing at the highest levels.” Mr Albanese said.

“The Rudd Labor Government has fulfilled our election commitment by providing $176,000 towards this upgrade, which was worth more than $482,000.

These funds helped Rockhampton and District Softball Association construct the Kele Park facility, install outdoor sports lighting and establish a canteen to cater for larger sporting functions.

“As a result of the upgrade, Kele Park has seen a 20 per cent increase in members since last year and already hosted a State Championship in April.

“Kele Park’s brand new facilities are also the proud home of a number of players from the Aussie Spirit, our national women’s softball team the same team that won bronze at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Ms Livermore said the upgrades undertaken at Kele Park provide first-class facilities for our community and will also bring visitors and touring teams to Rockhampton.

“It will be great to see local families and young people being able to use our new softball facility.

“This federally-funded upgrade has also brought district primary school fixtures, umpiring, coaching and scoring clinics, as well as a new Regional Academy for young players to Kele Park.

“I want to congratulate the Rockhampton and District Softball Association for delivering this fantastic project,” Ms Livermore said.

Minister Albanese and Ms Livermore also thanked Jupiters Casino Community Benefit Fund and Rockhampton Regional Council for funding the project.
