Today, I had the privilege of officially turning on the brand new lights at the BCU International Stadium in Coffs Harbour.
Tonight’s South Sydney Rabbitohs - Gold Coast Titans game is the first NRL game played under these floodlights, thanks to the Gillard Labor Government’s Economic Stimulus Plan.
This project, in which the Gillard Labor Government invested more than $2.1 million, will make it possible to televise night games played in Coffs Harbour to a digital broadcast standard.
This infrastructure upgrade will also help bring more sporting fixtures, concerts and major events to the region.
This is about supporting jobs on the Mid-North Coast, putting dollars into the economy and attracting more visitors to this beautiful part of Australia.
The construction of the specialised lighting system created 10 direct jobs and is expected to support many more indirectly in the region.
Coffs Harbour City Council deserves credit for taking on this project and completing it in time for tonight’s game.
The stadium lighting project is a great example of the Gillard Labor Government working with local government to support local communities and build community infrastructure for the future.
