New Chair For International Air Services Commission

I am pleased to announce that the Gillard Labor Government has appointed Jill Walker as Chair of the International Air Services Commission (IASC).

The International Air Services Commission allocates air rights between Australian airlines under our international air services agreements.

It promotes competition in the airline industry, giving Australian travellers more choice and better access to lower airfares.

Dr Walker brings to the Commission extensive experience and expertise in economics and competition policy.

She is currently a Commissioner of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and has previously served as a member of the Australian Competition Tribunal.

Dr Walker will join existing member Stephen Bartos on the Commission.

The Chairperson’s role is a part-time position and Dr Walker will continue her current role with the ACCC.

The International Air Services Commission is part of the Gillard Labor Government’s commitment to support a vibrant Australian-based aviation industry – a goal we set out in our National Aviation White Paper.

I would also like to pay tribute to departing member, Ian W. Smith, for his dedicated service to the Commission over the past three years.
