Act Continues To Benefit From Record Investment

The 2011-12 Budget continues the rollout of the Gillard Labor Government’s record capital works program which is renewing and expanding the Australia Capital Territory’s road infrastructure.

This coming financial year alone, we will be providing $82.2 million to progress a number of projects in the ACT.

During 2011-12, work is expected to be completed on the following projects (Commonwealth contribution shown):

• Widening the Monaro Highway from two to four lanes between Canberra Avenue and Newcastle Street in Fyshwick – Federal contribution: $18.5 million.

• Upgrading the road network around the Canberra Airport Precinct – Federal contribution: $11.5 million.

We will also continue funding an initiative designed to improve safety:

• $1.0 million to eliminate dangerous black spots on local roads.

The Gillard Labor Government will gift to the ACT $42 million for the redevelopment of Constitution Avenue, a major urban renewal project.

The 2011-12 Budget also provides $26.8 million to assist the ACT Government maintain and upgrade their local roads.

Since being elected a little over three years ago, this Labor Government’s priority has been to reverse the neglect we inherited and begin putting in place the modern, well-planned infrastructure critical to making the Australian Capital Territory even more prosperous and its economy even more productive.
