Funding For New Family Centre In Karratha

The Rudd Labor Government will provide $3 million to the Shire of Roebourne to construct a new family centre in Baynton West in Karratha.

Anthony Albanese, Minister for Infrastructure, Regional Development and Local Government, said that this project was expected to support 105 jobs during construction, as well as another 28 jobs over the longer term.

“It is worth a total of $12.3 million and will deliver a boost to the local economy.

“This is about creating jobs in the local economy today while delivering lasting benefits for a fast-growing community in the Pilbara.

“Importantly, this project also fulfils a goal that the Baynton West community has had for a number of years,” he said.

The Shire of Roebourne project is expected to construct a 'village style' centre with:

  • community meeting and activity spaces,

  • infant and family health clinics and services,

  • a 50-place child care centre, playgroup and occasional care space;

  • office space and kitchen areas for not-for-profit' organisations, along with associated car park facilities;

  • outdoor play areas and undercover walkways; and

  • environmentally sustainable design as well as native and local vegetation in landscaping.

Mr Albanese said that the new centre would also deliver family and community programs tailored for Indigenous families.

“In addition, the centre will showcase a range of public art with a focus on local Indigenous art.

“The funding is part of our Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program, which is delivering a record $1 billion for nearly 5,000 projects across the nation.

Across Australia, we are building and modernising community facilities, including town halls, libraries, community centres and sports grounds in partnership with local government,” he concluded.

The funding is conditional upon the council formalising a contract with the Government and meeting relevant conditions.
