Level Crossings Removed Under Regional Rail Link Works To Transform Sunshine

Construction of the Regional Rail Link project will involve the removal of two level crossings on Anderson Road in Sunshine – paving the way for a transformation of the Sunshine Station precinct.

Federal Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Anthony Albanese, said works packages released today for major construction between Sunshine and Footscray detailed plans to improve access to the station and improvements to local roads.

“Removing both the Anderson Road level crossings is a great outcome for the community, and the Regional Rail Link team will work with Brimbank Council to unlock potential around the Sunshine Station precinct.

“The $4.3 billion Regional Rail Link will deliver extra services on the Werribee, Sydenham, Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo lines – all running through Footscray Station.”

Key features of the Regional Rail Link works at the Sunshine precinct include:

  • Removal of both Anderson Road level crossings between Ballarat Road and Wright St;

  • A new footbridge and plaza entries at the station; and

  • A new platform and improvements to station safety and amenity.

Victorian Public Transport Minister Martin Pakula said Regional Rail Link was a demonstration of Federal and State Governments working together to provide major improvements for the travelling public.

“It is crucial that we deliver infrastructure to keep up with growing demand and Regional Rail Link is truly a nation building project with the Gillard Labor Government committing $3.2 billion to the project,” Mr Pakula said.

“In the last month I have had very strong representation from Brimbank Council and LeadWest about the need to remove these notorious level crossings.”

Member for Derrimut Telmo Languiller said the removal of two level crossings was great news for Sunshine residents.

“Having a number of level crossings so close to the station area has made it hard for motorists in peak hour and has also made it hard to progress development on the Sunshine area,” Mr Languiller said.

“Getting rid of two of our worst level crossings as part of Regional Rail Link is very exciting for the community.”

Member for Footscray Marsha Thomson said the $4.3 billion Regional Rail Link project would pave the way for additional train services on the busiest lines in Melbourne’s west.

“More people than ever before are using our train network, that is why we are building extra tracks through Melbourne’s booming west and rolling out 38 new trains,” she said.

Brimbank Council Chair of Administrators Peter Lewinsky said the removal of the level crossings would go a long way to realising council’s vision to radically improve the Sunshine central activities district.

“Removing these level crossings gives council a great opportunity to work with the project team and the Government to unlock the development potential in Sunshine,” Mr Lewinsky said.

“On one hand it is great for motorists that they won’t be stuck at boom gates but on a bigger level this paves the way for a complete rethink of how Sunshine and the station precinct works – it’s terrific news for the community.”
