Warren Truss should explain why he has cut $438,424 from Townsville City Council’s budget while he is in the city today.
The funding was allocated by the former Labor Government for essential community infrastructure projects that support jobs and boost the local economy.
But last year Mr Truss axed the grants, which were funded under Round 5 of the Regional Development Australia Fund.
The former Labor Government provided over $90 million of funding to Townsville City Council including $47 million for the Townsville Convention and Entertainment Centre and $16 million to upgrade the CBD.
Mr Truss should also explain why he has frozen Financial Assistance Grants to Townsville City Council, a move which increases pressure for the council to raise council rates.
If Mr Truss is serious about helping Northern Australia he should reinstate Townsville’s community infrastructure funding and unfreeze essential council payments.
