Woodford To Hazelbrook Upgrade: Work To Start This Month

The next stage in the upgrade of the Great Western Highway through the Blue Mountains – the widening of the road to four lanes between Station Street, Woodford and Winbourne Road, Hazelbrook – will begin within weeks.

Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese and Macquarie MP Bob Debus today visited Wentworth Falls to see firsthand the work already underway on the section between Tableland Road and Station Street, and to confirm major construction activities on the next stage will begin this month.

“I am pleased with the progress that’s being made on the upgrade of the Great Western Highway, particularly given that the preferred builder for the third stage was only selected last month,” said Mr Albanese.

“The significant investment we’re making in this Highway is a good example of our Nation Building Program at work creating jobs today by building the road infrastructure that will underpin our future prosperity.

“Once completed, the new sections will ease congestion, reduce travel times and improve driving conditions for the 34,000 motorists that use the Highway each day.”

The upgrade of the Highway between Wentworth Falls and Woodford is being jointly funded, with the Rudd Labor Government contributing $100 million and the Keneally Labor Government a further $175 million.

Mr Debus said as well as easing congestion the upgrade will also improve safety, an outcome locals will no doubt welcome, particularly in light of the two fatal accidents that occurred only last week along the Highway in the mountains.

“As well as widening the Highway, the upgrade from Station Street to Winbourne Road will also build a centre safety barrier, a pedestrian/cycle path, and a new pedestrian bridge connecting the Hazelbrook railway station with nearby shops,” said Mr Debus.

“I’d like to thank the local community for their patience and look forward to the completion of this vital road project.”

The widening of the Highway between Ferguson Avenue and Winbourne Road, Hazelbrook to four lanes was completed in September 2009. The Wentworth Falls East section will open to traffic in early 2012, with work on the Woodford to Hazelbrook section expected to be completed by late 2012.
