I have approved Adelaide Airport’s proposal to construct a new multi-level car park, pedestrian plaza and associated road works.
This $85 million project will support the airport’s recently completed terminal and accommodate expected increases in passengers at the airport over the next 20 years.
The car park will cater for up to 2,000 cars, with the new pedestrian plaza providing an improved link for pedestrians with the main terminal complex.
The proposed road works will improve the traffic flows in and around the airport by upgrading existing roads servicing the terminal and car park and improving pedestrian and traffic flows.
During construction, the project is expected to create 600 jobs, as well as about 27 ongoing jobs delivering a boost to the local economy.
Further, if Adelaide Airport proceeds with its proposal for an elevated walkway between the car park and the terminal, the Government will consider it in due course and the community would have the opportunity to comment.
I expect the airport owners to continue to work closely with the local and state governments while they improve access to the airport.
The project is due to be completed in mid 2012.
The Gillard Government is supporting investment in aviation infrastructure while making sure that local communities are properly consulted.
