Albanese Supports Government Decision On Books

Federal Member for Grayndler Anthony Albanese MP today supported the Federal Government's decision not to change the regulatory regime for books introduced by the previous Labor government.

The Productivity Commission had recommended removing the parallel importation restrictions on books. In doing so, it acknowledged that removing these restrictions would adversely affect Australian authors and publishers and recommended direct subsidies for authors and publishers as compensation.

The Government today decided not to accept the Productivity Commission's recommendation.

"My electorate has one of the highest numbers of creative artists in Australia," said Mr Albanese.

"Writers and publishers made clear their opposition to the Productivity Commission's recommendations and I am pleased that the Government decision has been welcomed by local writers, publishers, printers and independent book sellers."
