Beirut Explosion

BEIRUT EXPLOSION

Labor expresses its deepest sympathies to those affected by the horrifying explosion in Beirut and calls on the Morrison Government to offer direct help to Lebanese authorities.

Labor is seeking an urgent briefing on the situation.

While the ultimate toll is not yet known, it is clear there has been a significant loss of life, and thousands injured.

We understand at least one Australian has been killed and we send our condolences to the victim’s loved ones and to Australia’s Lebanese community.

Our thoughts are also with the Australian embassy staff, some of whom suffered minor injuries and damage to their homes.

There has also been significant damage done to the embassy. As embassy staff navigate the tough days ahead, they have our full support.

We know this will be an anxious time for many Lebanese Australians. Consular support is available for those concerned about relatives via +61 2 6261 3305 and updates are being provided by @Smartraveller on Twitter.

A difficult year has been made so much harder, for so many. Australia should work with authorities in Lebanon to offer whatever support we can.
