Grayndler
Monday, 8th November 2010
Labor Member for Grayndler Anthony Albanese today applauded Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s announcement that the Government was looking to hold a referendum to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Australian Constitution.
“Many people in the Inner West have told me how touched they were by Kevin Rudd’s apology to the stolen generations in 2008,” said Mr Albanese.
“It is now time to take the next step, to include a statement in the Constitution acknowledging the special place of indigenous people in this country.”
The Prime Minister announced the establishment of an expert panel including indigenous leaders and constitutional experts to provide advice on the form such constitutional recognition should take.
People are encouraged to make nominations for representatives for the expert panel by emailing: constitutional.recognition@fahcsia.gov.au. Nominations are open until 18 November.
