October 14 2009

The Rudd Labor Government will invest $5.4 million to upgrade and expand cycling infrastructure in communities across Sydney.

Appropriately, I’m making this announcement on National Ride to Work Day.

All up, we are partnering with 15 Sydney local councils to deliver $12.8 million for 22 projects through our National Bike Paths Fund.

The councils receiving funding are: Bankstown; Blacktown; Campbelltown; Botany Bay; Hunters Hill; Liverpool; Manly; Marrickville; Parramatta; Rockdale; Ryde; Sutherland Shire; Sydney; Waverley; and Wollondilly.

These projects are exactly what our Economic Stimulus Plan is all about. They will immediately support 281 local jobs while leaving a lasting legacy for the community through facilities that will encourage healthier lifestyles.

Building better cycling infrastructure will also help take cars off Sydney’s roads and reduce carbon emissions over the longer term.

A full list of projects is attached.

The Rudd Labor Government is delivering funding for cycling infrastructure around the country, providing more Australians with a greener, healthier way of getting to and from school and work, as well as recreational facilities.

There are about 1.9 million recreational cyclists in Australia, with more bikes sold last year than cars.
