Enrol To Vote

2012 has been designated the Year of Enrolment to celebrate both the centenary of compulsory enrolment and the fiftieth anniversary of the indigenous right to vote.
I urge people who aren't correctly enrolled to take the opportunity to update their details with the Australian Electoral Commission.
Compulsory enrolment was introduced in Australia on 27 March 1912 and has helped create a stable and fraud-proof electoral roll.
However, there are still over one million people eligible to be on the roll who aren't currently enrolled.
There are no penalties for people re-enrolling after a period of absence from the roll and enrolment carries the benefit of being able to exercise your democratic right to vote.
Enrolment forms can be downloaded from www.aec.gov.au/enrol or by contacting my office on 9564 3588.
