Grayndler
Tuesday, 15th December 2009
Federal Member for Grayndler, Anthony Albanese, today presented local men’s swimwear manufacturer aussieBum with their Australian Export Award in the Small to Medium Manufacturer category.
Mr Albanese visited aussieBum's Leichhardt headquarters with representatives of Austrade, which organises the awards; the Commonwealth Bank, which sponsored the awards; and the NSW Department of Industry and Investment.
"This is an innovative company marketing its products over the Internet to a global market, yet it has been resilient enough to not only weather the global financial crisis but increase its sales," said Mr Albanese.
The company was established in 2001 by Sean Ashby and Guyon Holland, who accepted the award from Mr Albanese.
The business has now grown and locally manufactures more than 150 different products, creating more than 30 direct local jobs and many more indirect jobs through their local supply chains. Total sales are in excess of $20 million.
Mr Albanese said he was pleased to hear that part of aussieBum's success has come from an investment in its workforce, encouraging existing staff to increase their skills.
“It is great to hear that local workers are getting the opportunity to be recognised on the world stage and I wish them all the best for the future,” Mr Albanese said.
The Australian Export Awards is a national annual program of events that seeks to recognise excellence and achievement in exporting. More information can be found at www.exportawards.gov.au
