Labor understands the importance of early childhood education, whether it be through reading, through writing or through creative exercises like this colouring-in competition. That’s why we’ve developed Labor’s Cheaper Child Care policy, which will make child care cheaper for more than one million Australian families.

The pandemic has been especially tough on working parents. Working from home is hard enough, but doing it while taking care of kids takes a special kind of patience.

Child care is great for kids, and it’s great for parents. It helps children’s development, and it helps parents get back to work.

But the truth is, child care is too expensive, and the way the system is currently designed means many parents, most often women, actually lose money if they work more than three days a week. Australian families pay some of the highest child care costs in the world, and fees have gone up by more than 35 percent under the Liberals.

In 2020 when I outlined Labor’s plan for cheaper child care, the Morrison Government dismissed our policy and ridiculed the economic gain that would come from investing in child care. Now the Liberals have rushed out a half-baked policy announcement that will only help one quarter of the families who will benefit from our plan.

Here’s how their plan stacks up against Labor’s superior child care policy:

Labor’s Cheaper Child Care Policy is going to help one million families – which is four times as many as the Liberals.

86 percent of all Australian families will be better off under Labor’s policy than they will be under the Liberal’s.

74 percent of families only have one child in child care – meaning they will receive absolutely no subsidy support from the Liberals.

Labor’s Cheaper Child Care Policy is economic reform that’s good for working families, good for our economy and good for children. It just makes sense.
