Libs & Nats attempt to block major road & rail projects

MEDIA RELEASE

The Hon Anthony Albanese MP

The Minister for Infrastructure, Transport,

Regional Development and Local Government

Leader of the House

Member for Grayndler

May 31 2009

The Liberal and National Parties will attempt to use their Senate numbers to block the rollout of the biggest ever investment in the nation’s road and rail infrastructure.

Nationals Leader Warren Truss has confirmed the Coalition will vote against the legislation necessary to deliver the Rudd Labor Government’s $26 billion Nation Building Program when debate resumes in the Parliament this week.

Together with the investment from States and Territories agreed to in a Memorandum of Understanding, this Program will result in over $32 billion of infrastructure investment.

With this action, the Coalition is threatening over 100 major road and rail projects. Attached is a list of all the projects now under threat.

Blocking vital road and rail infrastructure projects at anytime is unacceptable, but to do so in the midst of a global economic recession is a deliberate act of economic vandalism.

The Nation Building Program also includes the elimination of dangerous black spots, the installation of boom gates at high risk level crossings and the construction of additional rest stops for truck drivers.

Just as bizarre as their decision to vote against our legislation are the reasons the Coalition gives for doing so. They don’t want Federal dollars used to fix dangerous sections of highway or upgrade congested urban roads.

I urge the Coalition to urgently rethink their position. Their actions in the Parliament threaten not only the delivery of the Government’s infrastructure program but the tens of thousands of jobs it would create and support.

The opportunism of Malcolm Turnbull is emerging as the greatest threat to the nation’s economic recovery and the modernisation of our infrastructure.

Not satisfied with having left a massive infrastructure deficit, now the Coalition is attempting to thwart the Rudd Government taking action.

Already the Coalition under the leadership of Mr Turnbull has voted against the largest ever investment in school infrastructure, the extra money for community infrastructure and additional funding for transport infrastructure.

The Rudd Labor Government’s Nation Building Program is more than twice the size of the former government’s AusLink program.
