The Rudd Labor Government has agreed to provide $940,000 to improve the road connecting a major new industrial estate near Berrima in NSW with the Hume Highway.
Wingecarribee Shire Council has identified the area between Moss Vale and New Berrima as a future industrial and economic development zone – and a potential site for an inland transport terminal to support Port Kembla’s future growth.
Such a terminal project would generate a number of economic spin-offs. As well as supporting the Port’s expansion plans, it would create jobs for the residents of Moss Vale and Berrima – a win for industry and the local communities.
But its ultimate success depends in part on better road access for trucks.
The funding provided by the Rudd Labor Government – coupled with $310,000 from the Shire Council – will be used to replace the worn and cracked road surface and construct a roundabout at the Old Hume Highway and Taylor Avenue/Medway Road intersection near Berrima. See map below.
While the new roundabout will initially provide access for B double trucks, its design will allow it to be easily upgraded for use by B-triple trucks.
This $1.25 million joint road project is scheduled to start in August and be completed by March 2009.
The Boral Blue Circle cement works, Dux and Vale Engineering are among the cornerstone industries of the area. Since their establishment, smaller industries, such as Inghams’ feed storage facility, have also set up operations in the area due to close proximity to the Hume Highway and the Port.
Through investments of the kind we are making in partnership with the Wingecarribee Shire Council, the Rudd Labor Government is signalling our support for the economic and industrial development of all the nation’s regions.
