Condemnation of Russian Aggression in Ukraine

with Senator Penny Wong

Labor condemns Russia’s unilateral recognition of separatist territories in eastern Ukraine.

This is a blatant violation of international law and the territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as a breach of the Minsk agreements.

We stand with Ukraine, and our US and European allies, in expressing our strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, and condemnation for Russia’s continuing aggression. There is no justification.

The international community must make clear the consequences for Russia if there is not an immediate halt to all military operations and a return to negotiations.

There are a range of options available to the Australian Government, including:

  • The withdrawal of Australia’s Ambassador to Russia for consultations;
  • Consideration of technical military assistance for Ukraine, as well as stepping up cyber security support; and
  • Imposing targeted sanctions against Russians facilitating this aggression under the new Magnitsky legislation.

Labor expects to be consulted on any developments in Australia’s position. In an election year it is critical that bipartisanship be maintained on challenges to national security that affect us all, and which go beyond domestic politics.

The Australian Government should be working to ascertain and ensure the safety of Australians in Ukraine, as well as providing additional support for the Australian-Ukrainian community.
