First Stage Of Sydney’s Bike Path Network Opens

The latest addition to Sydney’s network of bike paths has opened to cyclists, becoming the first of the more than 170 cycle infrastructure projects funded as part of the Economic Stimulus Plan to be completed.

Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese today joined with Sydney MP Tanya Plibersek and City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore to mark the official opening of almost three kilometres of new bike paths in Alexandria.

“Under our Economic Stimulus Plan, we provided Sydney City Council with $1.79 million to build bike paths along Bourke Road, Mandible Street and Bowden Street, one part of a multi-stage cycleway network that will eventually stretch over 200 kilometres,” said Mr Albanese.

“I congratulate the Council for moving so quickly to put our economic stimulus money to work creating jobs and building this much needed community infrastructure.

“All up, councils around Australia received $40 million to expand their cycling infrastructure – an investment that has been supporting some 1,900 jobs during the global recession and overtime will help improve the air quality within our towns and cities, and encourage healthier lifestyles amongst their residents.”

Ms Plibersek said bike paths generate lasting economic, social and environmental benefits for the entire community.

“These new bike paths mean more residents and visitors can ride their bicycles in a safe and fun environment,” Ms Plibersek said.

“Bike paths offer the opportunity to get to and from work and around the city safely and in a sustainable way.”
