Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was delighted to be at the Fraser Park Football Club in Marrickville to kick-off the football season. It was wonderful to see so many families and young people at the opening of the upgraded Fraser Park. Sport brings people together - and investing in good facilities makes our communities stronger. There might just be some future Socceroos and Matildas players training right here, in Marrickville.
In recent times we’ve seen a 20 per cent increase in the number of football players in this country. And with the World Cup coming to Australia and New Zealand in the middle of the year, that's going to just get even bigger and better.
As Minister for Infrastructure, Anthony provided $2 million for the upgrade of facilities for the Club. And that made an enormous difference in making sure that this club could continue to not just survive, but to thrive. Since its inception as a Portuguese football club, it's become a club not just for the Portuguese, but for the Inner West community as a whole. The multicultural, vibrant community where people work together in common interests is why the Inner West is so great.
