Labor’s PJCIS Membership

Statement and recommendation on Labor’s Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security (PJCIS) Membership.

Anthony Byrne, the Member for Holt, has today offered his resignation to me on the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security (PJCIS).

I have accepted Mr Byrne’s resignation.

I will be recommending to the Prime Minister that Senator Jenny McAllister hold the position of Deputy Chair of the Committee. In addition, I will be recommending that Peter Khalil, Member for Wills, be appointed as a Committee member.

Senator McAllister and Mr Khalil will make outstanding contributions to this Committee.

These two members of parliament will continue Labor’s tradition of strongly supporting the work of this Committee and the role it plays in our democracy.

Mr Byrne has served the PJCIS in a number of roles since 2005 including as Chair and Deputy Chair.

I thank Mr Byrne for his important contributions to this Committee in Australia’s national interest.
