SUBJECTS: Lockdown, craft beer, $300 COVID vaccine incentive.
TIM BLACKWELL: Albo, even in Canberra we are live mate. So lovely of you to join us this morning.
ANTHONY ALBANESE: What do you mean even in Canberra? It’s a not a bad city - Australia’s largest inland city.
KATE RITCHIE: You are making it sound like the poor cousin when you say it like that.
BLACKWELL: I was just trying to introduce Anthony Albanese properly. Last time you were on this show you had a great stat about the craft breweries in Sydney in the Inner West, which is our local area.
ALBANESE: I did. They are struggling at the moment, but they are doing takeaways. So if can drop in somewhere to one of those small businesses or get them delivered, please do so. They are doing it really tough.
KARL STEFANOVIC: Albo, it’s Karlos. Nice to talk to you my man. You were on the show earlier this week – The Today Show - and you were giving $300 away to people who get an injection. I am very keen on getting that injection. I think it is a great idea.
BLACKWELL: Me too. I have already double jabbed.
ALBANESE: Absolutely. Where is the downside here?
BLACKWELL: There is none.
ALBANESE: You get an economic stimulus so that people can go and buy a slab or do it however they want – local small business - and you get a good health outcome – a bit better than distributing money with a colour-chart in marginal seats. Everyone would get it. Every economist, I saw Professor Philip Clarke from Oxford had a piece up yesterday about how the best way to give an incentive isn’t through lotteries. It is actually to give it to everyone.
STEFANOVIC: I don’t mind all that pork barrelling stuff though Albo. As long as it is your neighbourhood getting a great big all built. It’s a great wat to waste money.
ALBANESE: The problem is mate it only goes to some people and then in the end sometimes it doesn’t get built. They are up to two of the 47 car parks they promised in what I call the Pork-and-Ride scheme.
BLACKWELL: You haven’t been at home for a while Albo.
ALBANESE: I haven’t been home. Could you drop round and check the mail mate?
STEFANOVIC: I am not allowed to.
BLACKWELL: I will go and check your mail. I am in the 10km radius.
ALBANESE: You are a local. If you do that, and water the garden please mate. My son has many, many attributes but discipline in looking after watering the garden isn’t one of them.
STEFANOVIC: Albo, you don’t know the half it. It’s like Risky Business over there at the moment.
BLACKWELL: With no socks. That’s the only difference.
ALBANESE: It’s good just for the lockdown. At least there won’t be people on the roof. They would be reported.
BLACKWELL: How is Canberra though, mate. You are in quarantine in Canberra. Karl was telling me yesterday you are only allowed kind of between the hotel and Parliament House.
ALBANESE: My flat and Parliament House. But I am allowed an hour’s exercise a day. It looks pretty stunning out there. You’ve got to wait to the middle of the day in Canberra. That is the difference. It is too cold for me really early in the morning.
RITCHIE: What kind of exercise do you prefer?
ALBANESE: The exercise I prefer I am not allowed to do. They have banned tennis and Karlos and I have had the occasional hit.
RITCHIE: How does Karlos play?
ALBANESE: He’s all right. He has a crack. He is a trier.
BLACKWELL: His favourite score is deuce – gin and juice.
ALBANESE: He is good after the match.
BLACKWELL: Lovely to speak to you. Thanks for your time this morning. Anything you would like to say to the people of Australia? You’ve got an open forum here. We are live into every market. I know we are about to play a song from Powderfinger for you.
ALBANESE: Stay safe. That’s number one. Follow the rules and the guidelines. Keep looking after each other. You have been magnificent. If you can get vaccinated, please do as soon as possible.
BLACKWELL: I will text you my BSB and account number for that $300 too.
ALBANESE: Mate, I was surprised that they rejected it so readily, Apparently this is the party that brought in the Baby Bonus, cash payments and the No Jab, No Play for the child care payments and family payments. Apparently it’s not a good idea.
STEFANOVIC: I thought it was a no brainer Albo. Just stick to your guns.
ALBANESE: Yes, you backed it in, as did anyone with common sense.
