Statement on Kim Carr’s Retirement from the Senate

On behalf of a grateful Australian Labor Party, I pay tribute to the contribution of Senator Kim Carr as he announces his retirement from serving the people of Victoria and Australia in the Senate.

On behalf of a grateful Australian Labor Party, I pay tribute to the contribution of Senator Kim Carr as he announces his retirement from serving the people of Victoria and Australia in the Senate.

Kim Carr has been a tireless advocate for the cause of Labor during his three decades of service in our nation’s parliament.

In particular, the parliament has had no stronger supporter of Australian manufacturing and science than Kim Carr.

He was determined to advocate for the interests of manufacturing workers, as well as bringing his background in teaching to pursue greater support for science and education.

Kim served as minister in the Rudd and Gillard Governments as Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Minister for Manufacturing, Minister for Defence Materiel, Minister for Human Services and Minister for Higher Education.

Kim was also a major contributor to the Senate Committee process – such a critical component of our democracy.

Through his career, Kim also played a leading role as a long-term member of the ALP National Executive.

Kim has always been a passionate and resolute campaigner for the Labor Party and the union movement’s push to ensure workers’ rights at work are respected.

I wish Kim, Carole and their family all the best for their future.
