Statement on the Retirement of Ash Barty

Ash has been an inspiration to so many, in particular encouraging girls to play sport and providing a role model for young First Nations Australians.

On behalf of the Australian Labor Party, we congratulate Ash Barty on her outstanding achievements in tennis.

In calling time on her career today, Ash displayed the class, graciousness and humility that are the hallmarks of her time in tennis and played a big part in her becoming such a popular champion and respected role model.

Throughout her sporting career, Ash Barty has made a point of remaining grounded and in touch with the people, places and things that matter to her outside of sport.

She has also gone out of her way to acknowledge that her success has been supported by the team around her, an example we should all aspire to.

Ash has been an inspiration to so many, in particular encouraging girls to play sport and providing a role model for young First Nations Australians.

Australian sport will miss a true champion, in every sense of the word.

A three-time Grand Slam singles champion, Ash finished the past three years as world number one and now goes out on top.

I wish her all the best in whatever life holds for her next.
