Triple M Brisbane the Big Breakfast

Discussing the NRL Grand Final, the South Sydney Rabbitohs and more.

SUBJECTS: NRL; NRL Grand Final; South Sydney Rabbitohs.

HOST: When you hear this music, you think of only one person.

HOST: The Rabbitohs?

HOST: The Rabbitohs' team song. And it's John Sattler on the line. No, it's not. It's Anthony Albanese. Albo?

ANTHONY ALBANESE, LEADER OF THE AUSTRALIAN LABOR PARTY: How are you going? I wish I was as good a footy player as John Sattler.

HOST: Mate, the reason we ring you is because I see that journo a couple of weeks ago outed ScoMo as a pretend Sharks supporter. And this goes on in the world of politics. And we're worried, someone like Margaux and myself, we are wonderful Broncos fans. Margaux, could you name all the years of all six premierships to the Broncos?

HOST: Geez. I know we definitely won one in '06, 2000, '97, '98 and I think '92 and '93, wasn’t it?

HOST: Albo, you see the sort of knowledge we’re after.

ALBANESE: That's pretty good.

HOST: Are you testing the knowledge of Anthony Albanese's commitment to the Rabbitohs?

HOST: Do you remember last time when you came on, we had you playing 'Was it a quote from the Bible or Bennett'? And Albo passed the test nicely. So, I have another quiz for you. You didn't ring up for a political chat, did you, I hope?

ALBANESE: Always happy to talk the Bunnies, particularly in Grand Final week where we are in it.

HOST: Are you definitely a bona fide Bunnies supporter?

ALBANESE: I was a South Sydney board member, director, in the late 90s when we got kicked out of the comp and came back.

HOST: Did you march with George Piggins and Andrew Denton?

ALBANESE: We helped organise the marches there. I was on the board at that time. And I came out of the womb with a red eye and a green eye. I took my son in 2014 to the Grand Final and my mum took me back in 1971.

HOST: Do I need correcting? Have South Sydney won more premierships than anyone else?

ALBANESE: We have indeed - 21.

HOST: What year did the Rabbitohs win their first premiership?

ALBANESE: 1908.

HOST: OK, one, a little more modern question. Who won the Clive Churchill Medal in 2014?

ALBANESE: Sam Burgess.

HOST: Jesus, that was quick.

HOST: Who did he break his cheekbone on? Whose head?

ALBANESE: James Graham.

HOST: You've already named the father, what was his son's name who played for Penrith in their Grand Final?

ALBANESE: Scott Sattler. Took the winger out across the sideline in one of the great tackles of any grand final.

HOST: True fan of the rugby league.

HOST: If you were on Mastermind, your category wouldn't be Labor Party politics.

ALBANESE: No, it would be Souths, mate.

HOST: Can I check, you wanted to name, I now have it in front of me, the 1971 winning Rabbitohs team. Could I possibly get you to name it?

ALBANESE: The front row were Sattler, George Piggins, who replaced Elwyn Walters who was injured, and John O'Neill.

HOST: Yes, correct.

ALBANESE: Second rowers were McCarthy and Gary Stevens.

HOST: Oh my god.

ALBANESE: Ronny Coote as lock. Bobby Grant, halfback.

HOST: Yes.

ALBANESE: Denis Pittard was five-eighth. The fullback, of course, was Eric Simms.

HOST: Yes.

ALBANESE: The centres were Paul Sait and Bob Honan. The wingers were, now this is a bit tricky because there were injuries and various things. Ray Branighan.

HOST: Yes, you are right. I don’t care. Keith Edwards, we know you were going to say it.

ALBANESE: Keith Edwards.

HOST: Who was at the helm of our political charter then in 1971? Do you remember? Was it Labor or Liberal? Who was the leader?

ALBANESE: Billy McMahon.

HOST: Big ears.

ALBANESE: A very forgettable Prime Minister.

HOST: The only thing you could remember was his wife's dresses that she used to wear and hanging the boobs out.

ALBANESE: Before the great Gough came in in '72.

HOST: Hey, enjoy the Grand Final.

ALBANESE: I can name the 2014 Grand Final team too.

HOST: Can someone turn his microphone down?

HOST: We can't hear you.

ALBANESE: Go the Bunnies.

HOST: Anthony Albanese. Thank you.

HOST: Greatest political interview ever. Cheers, mate.

ALBANESE: Cheers.
