Visit to South America for the APEC and G20 Leaders’ Summits

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will travel this week to Peru to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting, and to Brazil to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

APEC and G20 play a critical role in steering the regional and global economies through current global economic challenges.

At these meetings, the Prime Minister will work closely with international partners to address global challenges and promote economic growth.

At APEC, the Prime Minister will continue Australia’s commitment to building stronger trade and investment among the growing economies of our region. The Prime Minister will promote more regional economic integration and free and open trade in the Asia‑Pacific.

APEC’s 21 member economies are home to more than 2.9 billion people and make up over 60 per cent of global GDP. APEC partners make up around 75 per cent of Australia’s total trade in goods and services. The focus of APEC is on practical steps to make it easier for business across the region to trade and grow.

At G20, the Prime Minister will work to strengthen global cooperation on major economic challenges facing the world. The Prime Minister will advance Australia’s priorities as a major power in food security, through sustainable and smart agriculture and as a major supplier of energy to the region and globally.

The G20 brings together the world’s major economies. Its members represent 85 per cent of global GDP, 75 per cent of international trade and around 80 per cent of the world’s population.

Quotes attributable to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese:

“These two meetings come at an important time as we work through the global inflation challenge.

“We are working at home and with international partners to put downward pressure on inflation and help safeguard Australia’s economy against global challenges, as well as building the new economic links that will sustain a Future Made in Australia.

“I thank President of Peru, Dina Boluarte, and President of Brazil, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, for hosting these important meetings.”
