Minister Reaffirms New England Highway Budget Pledges

Today I joined local MP Tony Windsor at Bolivia Hill to reaffirm the commitment given by the Gillard Labor Government in this week’s Federal Budget to fund the necessary planning work on a future upgrade to this section of the New England Highway.

Located south of Tenterfield, the section around Bolivia Hill has a poor safety record having been the scene of thirteen crashes, including four fatalities, over the past decade.

In addition the 2011-12 Budget also commissions planning work on a bypass of Tenterfield which has the potential to take up to 600 trucks and thousands of cars a day off the town’s local streets as well as deliver safer driving conditions and shorter travel times for all motorists that use this section of Highway.

Following strong representations from Tony Windsor we’ve allocated up to $6 million to complete the initial planning on both projects.

The planning work to be undertaken – along with the community consultations which will occur – will establish preferred routes, costings and realistic construction timetables for both projects.

Funding for planning on both projects will come from within the existing budgetary allocation for the Nation Building Program, with additional money for construction to be considered in future budgets once this work has been completed.
