Multicultural Festivals A Celebration Of Diversity

Speaking at the Domenica Italiana Festival at Marrickville Town Hall, Federal Member for Grayndler Anthony Albanese has congratulated Marrickville Council on its cultural events and the way they bring local communities together.

“While each festival might individually celebrate the Italian, Greek, Vietnamese, Portuguese or African communities, they provide an opportunity to bring the different groups in Marrickville together and encourage them to explore what the other cultures have to offer,” said Mr Albanese.

“They are always very well attended and for a relatively small expense, they are a fantastic investment in social cohesion.”

The event included cooking demonstrations, samples of Italian food, and performances from singers Francesca Brescia and Claudio Sandrelli as well as a tarantella dancing display.

According to census statistics, more than a third of Grayndler residents were born overseas with China, England, Italy and Greece the most common places of birth.

“I hope this event continues to be an integral part of the Marrickville calendar,” said Mr Albanese.

At the Domenica Italiana Festival in Marrickville, Anthony spoke of the importance of these festivals in bringing the local community together.
