Caring for Older Australians

Older Australians helped build this country. They worked hard, paid their taxes and raised their families. They deserve to be treated with respect.

They rightly expected that the Federal Government would support them in their frailer years.

That’s what they deserve, that’s what they’ve earned, after a life contributing to their communities and to Australia.

But the Morrison Government has neglected older Australians and the aged care system for the best part of a decade – it's a national disgrace.

Scott Morrison is responsible for the aged care system. As Treasurer, he personally cut funding twice and he is responsible for the terrible neglect identified in the Royal Commission.

The Royal Commission graphically highlighted the tragic outcomes of their neglect including maggots in the wounds of residents and two thirds of residents being malnourished or at risk of malnourishment.

The Morrison Government’s response to the Royal Commission and the aged care crisis falls well short. It fails to deliver enduring improvements and lasting reforms for the long run.

They’ve fobbed off, delayed or outright rejected key recommendations. Of the 148, over half are not being implemented or aren’t being implemented properly.

They’ve ignored the recommendation to require a nurse to be on duty 24/7 in residential care. This is core to improving clinical care for frail Australians.

Nothing will change without reform to the workforce. There was nothing to improve wages for overstretched, undervalued aged care workers.

They’re gifting $3.2billion to providers (via a Basic Daily Fee increase) but have not required this goes to improved care or better food, rather than management bonuses or a new office fit out.

They’ve failed to clear the Home Care Package waitlist of 100,000. Only 80,000 packages were included in the Budget over the next two years, but thousands join the waitlist every year. The maths doesn’t add up.

Their promise of mandatory care minutes for each resident is also full of holes. It doesn’t meet the Royal Commission recommendation and we now know that cleaning and some admin will be included as ‘care minutes’.

Scott Morrison failed to listen to Australians in aged care, to their families and to the workers in the system. He failed to listen to 21 expert reports and, even to his own Royal Commission.

Only a Labor Government will treat aged care residents with the respect they deserve.
