National Families Week (14-20 May)
MEDIA RELEASE – ANTHONY ALBANESE MP
16 May 2006
Anthony Albanese MP, Federal Member for Grayndler, has drawn attention to the fact that this week (14 – 20 May) is National Families Week.
“Families nowadays are not just the traditional unit of mum, dad and kids. They include single mums, single dads, de facto couples and same sex couples with children,” said Mr Albanese.
“Families play a vital role in our communities, with many also providing support and care for grandparents and other extended family members.”
Mr Albanese said it was unfortunate that the Howard Government has been dragging Australian families down, rather than lifting them up.
“John Howard’s Industrial Relations legislation is extremely hostile to families. It puts job security, wages and overtime on the line, which in turn has a knock-on effect to every part of family life.”
“You can’t pay the mortgage if your wages are cut. You can’t spend more time with the kids if your employer offers you a contract on a “take it or leave it” basis that says you have to work weekends.”
He also pointed out the Government’s failure in the recent budget to relieve the pressure on families looking for childcare.
“The Government wants parents to get back into the workforce after having children, but you can’t return to work if there’s no childcare available for the kids. This pressure is felt significantly in Sydney’s inner west.”
Labor’s budget response includes a commitment to fixing the childcare crisis.
Mr Albanese said, “A Beazley Labor Government will contribute $200 million towards building 260 new childcare centres, and will put job security back into the industrial relations system.”
“Only Labor is committed to helping Australian families,” he concluded.
