New Noise Monitor For Willetton

Today I announced Airservices Australia will install a noise monitor at Willetton in Western Australia in response to community concerns about the impact of aircraft noise.
The noise monitor will be used to measure typical noise levels of aircraft departing from Perth Airport and flying over Willetton.
New noise monitors will also be installed at Leeming, Canning Vale and Bibra Lake as part of a planned program of work.
Over the last five years, the number of flights into and out of Perth has increased by 40 per cent. This growth, fuelled largely by the mining industry and demand for fly-in, fly-out services, has been phenomenal.
While aviation safety will always be our first priority, we recognise that the huge growth in air traffic means we need to continue looking at how we can better manage the impact of aircraft noise on communities.
Since 2007, the Federal Labor Government has overhauled community consultation and strengthened measures to better manage aircraft noise impacts on communities living near airports. Today’s announcement is the latest in a long line of improvements including:

  • The appointment of Ron Brent as Australia’s first Aircraft Noise Ombudsman;

  • Passing legislation to ban the operations of old, noisy jet aircraft at a number of Australian major airports including Perth;

  • Establishing independently chaired Community Aviation Consultation Groups for Australia’s major airports, including Perth, which consult the community on issues arising from airport operations and developments;

  • Issuing a Ministerial directive requiring that Airservices properly consult the community on any significant developments or changes to an airport’s services.

Airservices has four permanent noise monitors located around Perth Airport – at Guildford, Greenmount, Cannington and Queens Park.
The monitors form part of Australia's Noise and Flight Path Monitoring System, the world’s largest, most geographically spread system of its type.
