Homes for Australia

Australia needs more homes. That’s why we’re making it easier to build, rent and buy - because every Australian deserves the security of a roof over their head.

Building 1.2 million homes.

To make housing more affordable, we need to build more homes.

That’s why we have an ambitious goal of building 1.2 million homes by the end of the decade.

It’s part of our comprehensive $32 billion Homes for Australia plan.

Building homes is hard work. It won’t happen overnight. But it’s the best and most lasting fix to our affordable housing shortage.

Our plan for 1.2 million homes means we are:

  • Training more tradies, funding more apprenticeships, growing the workforce

  • Kickstarting construction by cutting red tape

  • Providing incentives to state governments to get homes built quickly

  • Delivering the biggest investment in social housing in more than a decade to help reduce homelessness

Delivering a better deal for renters.

We’re helping nearly 1 million households with the cost of rent by delivering the first back‑to‑back increase to Commonwealth Rent Assistance in more than 30 years.

We’ve reached A Better Deal for Renters with states and territories to strengthen renters’ rights across Australia.

We’ll require universities to increase student accommodation, taking pressure off the rental market.

And we’re building more rental homes in more parts of Australia, with:

  • A new $9.3 billion National Agreement on Social Housing and Homelessness which will help build more social housing.

  • The $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund which will build 30,000 social and affordable rental homes.

  • The $2 billion Social Housing Accelerator which will build around 4,000 social rental homes.

  • 10,000 affordable rental homes under the National Housing Accord, matched by states and territories.

  • Support for build-to-rent accommodation.

Help to buy a home.

We’ve helped more than 110,000 people buy their own home through the expanded Home Guarantee Scheme.

The Home Guarantee Scheme supports people to buy a home with a smaller deposit – in some cases as little as two per cent – and avoid paying Lenders Mortgage Insurance.

And our Help to Buy scheme will provide an equity contribution of up to 40 per cent for 40,000 low and middle income families to purchase a home of their own.
