Fancy meeting up with Jo Haylen MP, Mayor Darcy Byrne and GARRANGA BUMARRI (which means ‘pelican’ in the area’s First Language) at Marrickville Town Hall.

Paint Inner West Read’s pelican mascot regularly attends local storytelling sessions, to share his love of reading, and to meet kids in the inner west.

His booklet, Garranga Bumarri Spread his Wings, is the latest instalment of a program spreading the joy of reading books and learning.

Let me tell you about Deyaan Udani. Deyaan was a bright seven-year-old boy from Woodcroft in Sydney who tragically passed away while on family holiday in 2016. Not long before the trip, Deyaan learned about organ donation. He told his parents that he wanted to be an organ donor one day to help save the lives of others. A few months later when Deyaan passed away, his mum and dad were faced with the decision to donate Deyaan's organs. They decided to honour Deyaan's wish – saving four lives and restoring sight for two others. I'm wearing orange – Deyaan's favourite colour – for Saffron Day. It's a day to honour Deyaan, and to raise awareness for organ donation. Giving the gift of life is one of the most powerful things any of us can do. I can remember screwing it into the wall more than 30 years ago.

Mum bought me the drill set and I got stuck into the brick wall.

This is the social housing home where my mum raised me by herself while she was on a disability pension.

There was a real sense of community back then, and you can still see it there today.

When mum got sick and had to go to hospital – which was pretty often – the neighbours would take turns to cook me dinner.

I'll never forget that generosity of spirit, with everyone pitching in.

It's that same spirit we've seen this year when disasters have struck us. When the going gets tough, we stick together.

I want a Labor Government so we can build more public housing homes like this.

It's not just good for the people who live there, but it's going to be great for the economy.

Think of all the construction jobs we'll create.

Think of all the homes we'll build. All the lives we'll improve.

That'd be a legacy to be proud of.

I was the first person in my family to finish scho

I was the first person in my family to finish school let alone go to university. I know the difference education can make to someone's life – and these students at @uni_newcastle know it too. I met with them with local MP #EmmaMcBride and @sendeborahoneill. They're part of the uni's enabling program which has given more than 60,000 people – folks who have been so hard done by – the shot at higher ed. Most of them are women, and most of them are the first in their family to go to uni too. The students I spoke to are learning to become teachers, nurses and social workers – because they want to give back to their community. Programs like this matter. Giving people the chance to succeed matters. And that's what will guide my Labor Government every day – because it'll be led by someone who has lived it.
