Phoney Tony Off Again, On Again Princes Highway Promise

I welcome the Liberal Party’s new found interest in the Princes Highway – it’s just a pity that when they had twelve years to do something about this road they chose to do nothing.

Put simply, if the former Howard Government had made a similar financial commitment to the one we’re now making, then the duplication of this road would be nearing completion.

Even now Mr Abbott is only promising to do something if he’s successful at this year’s election as well as the one after that.

As well as refusing to commit any money to the Princes Highway, the Liberal Party also ripped more than $2 billion out of the Federal roads budget last time they were in government.

With such a poor record, how can anyone ever again trust a word they say?

For our part the Rudd Labor Government pledged $110 million to duplicate the road between Waurn Pounds and Winchelsea – a commitment that’s being matched dollar for dollar by the Brumby Labor Government.

Good progress is already being made on delivering this long overdue upgrade, with the detailed planning work currently being finalised and construction expected to start later this year.
