Remembrance Plaque To Be Unveiled At Local School

This Remembrance Day, Anthony Albanese MP, Member for Grayndler, will be unveiling a plaque to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the end of World War II at Casimir Catholic College, Marrickville.

The plaque was funded as part of the Australian Government’s Saluting Their Service 2005 Electorate Grants program.

Mr Albanese said, “2005 has been an important commemorative year in our history, and in turn this Remembrance Day has particular significance.”

“I am looking forward to joining students at Casimir College this 11 November to take part in their Remembrance Day ceremony. The plaque that will be unveiled will serve as a constant reminder for future students at the college of the sacrifices made by so many Australian men and women 60 years ago.”

As part of the Electorate Grants program, the Sydney and Metropolitan Ex-POW Welfare Association also received funding for a commemoration service and luncheon. On 29 September, the Association gathered surviving POWs from around Sydney and held a wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph at Martin Place and luncheon.

Mr Albanese said of the event: “My morning with the ex-POWs was very moving. It was an honour to spend time with these tremendously strong people, who continue to be an important link to our past. I congratulate Betty Elworthy for organising this event.”

Mr Albanese said he was pleased to see local organisations marking the significant 60th Anniversary of the end of World War II in a variety of ways.

Mr Albanese will be at Casimir College, 200 Livingstone Road Marrickville, from 10.45am to 11.15am this Friday 11 November to unveil the plaque.
