Rob Oakeshott's Candidacy For Speaker

I note Rob Oakeshott has today indicated his desire to be a candidate for Speaker of the House.

Mr Oakeshott is a strong representative for his electorate, and would make a good candidate for Speaker. However this is obviously an unusual situation in the history of our Parliament, with potential implications for the practical operation of the House of Representatives.

These circumstances may also necessitate discussions across the Parliament regarding how best to facilitate an independent fulfilling both the role of Speaker and Member of Parliament representing their electorate.

The Government will seek legal advice on potential implications before indicating its final view.
