Work is now complete on safety upgrades at two high risk black spots in Urunga and Nambucca, with funding having come from the Rudd Labor Government’s Economic Stimulus Plan.
Details of the completed projects are:
- Intersection of Orara Street and Newry Street, Urunga: $107,850 to construct a new roundabout.
- Bowra Street, Nambucca Heads: $34,000 for the construction of a new pedestrian island.
These projects were recommended by a panel of independent road safety experts.
The Black Spot program has a proven track record of saving lives with an evaluation showing that it prevented at least 32 fatalities and more than 1,500 serious injuries in its first three years.
Not only have we honoured our election commitment to increase on-going black spot funding by a massive 33 per cent, but we’ve also provided significant additional funding under our Economic Stimulus Plan.
Under the Plan, we provided state and territory road authorities with an extra $150 million to fix 607 dangerous black spots which collectively have been the scenes of thousands of crashes, with some resulting in the loss of life.
Together we’re building safer roads, which over time will help drive down the appalling social and economic cost of road carnage.
It is unfortunate that this extra investment was opposed in the Parliament by the Liberal and National parties, including the Member for Cowper.
