Grayndler
Tuesday, 29th August 2006
On Monday 28 August 2006, Tony Burke MP, Shadow Minister for Immigration, spoke at an open forum hosted by Marrickville ALP Branches.
The forum was introduced by Grayndler MP Anthony Albanese, and was entitled "When families get locked up".
More than 60 members of the local community attended the event, which was held in Herb Greedy Hall, Marrickville.
Mr Albanese said, “The forum was a great opportunity for people in the local community to meet Mr Burke and hear about Labor’s stance against the Government on the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers.”
Mr Burke spoke about his experience as Shadow Minister, visiting Australia’s immigration detention centres and meeting with some of the world’s most vulnerable people.
Mr Burke and Mr Albanese both spoke out strongly against the Government’s proposed changes to the migration legislation, which were withdrawn because they faced defeat in the Senate.
Below are links to Mr Burke’s and Mr Albanese’s speeches in Parliament against the legislation:
