Equality for Women

Labor has a proud legacy of advancing women’s rights and a long-held commitment to gender equality. We know that much remains to be done to eliminate discrimination, harassment and abuse and to achieve equality. We’ve come a long way but our journey is not complete.

A Labor Government would:

  • Work to close the gender pay gap
  • Ensure women are safe at work
  • Take urgent action to end domestic violence

Closing the gender pay gap.

Women have been hit hard by the pandemic. Women have lost their jobs at a greater rate than men, and have lost more hours at work too. Labor will tackle that head on with our Secure Australian Jobs Plan. But we need to do more. Australia’s gender pay gap is 13%. It’s not good enough. That’s why Labor will also lead a national push to help close the gender pay gap.

Ending domestic violence: change is urgent.

Almost one in four Australian women have experienced violence from an intimate partner. Each week an Australian woman is murdered by her current or former partner. The need for change is urgent. Labor will establish 10 days of paid domestic violence leave, and build an additional 4000 units of social housing to women and children experiencing family violence and older women on lower incomes.

Women deserve to be safe at work.

We need to recognise the battles women face at work - whether it be workplace harassment, pay inequities or everyday sexism. That’s why Labor has fully embraced all 55 recommendations of the Respect@Work report. We’ll also ensure there are Working Women's Centres in every state and territory to provide free, confidential assistance on workplace matters.

Making child care cheaper so more parents can go back to work.

Without access to affordable child care many parents are unable to work and this sacrifice is often taken by mums. Under Labor, we will scrap the cap on rebates, which often sees women losing more money from taking on an extra day of work.
