Jobs and the Future of Work

At the heart of everything Labor does is a simple promise: you deserve an economy that works for you, not the other way around. I know that work isn’t just about a pay cheque. With work comes purpose, self-confidence and dignity. As industries change, one thing remains constant – Labor will always fight to protect your job and your rights at work.

Labor's vision:

  1. We have endless renewable resources and the potential for generations of good, well-paying jobs – but only if we have the leadership to make it happen. Labor will turn Australia into a renewable energy superpower.
  2. Labor will make sure Australians get the training they need for the jobs they want. We will establish Jobs and Skills Australia, bringing together unions and businesses, governments and industry, to better match the skills training of today with the job of tomorrow.
  3. Over the past decade, we’ve seen penalty rates cut and the door left open to even more cuts down the road. That’s not how we look after people. Labor will defend your penalty rates and your rights at work.

The details:

We understand work isn’t just about a pay cheque. With work comes purpose, self-confidence and dignity. Good jobs strengthen families and communities.

Australians are worried about the future of their job, and the jobs their children will have in the future. They are anxious about facing technological change greater than any time in human history. They deserve reassurance that the future of work will help them get ahead and not fall behind.

As a party born of working Australians, Labor will fight to see aspirations rewarded and hopes realised. We want to build an economy that works for people, not the other way around.

The future belongs to those countries that can innovate, adapt and adjust, but our industrial relations system is being strained by the emergence of new forms of work. One of them is the massive growth in the gig economy. We want people to choose this kind of work because it benefits them, not because they have no other choice and not as a tool to attack people’s pay and conditions.

Labor will bring back an emphasis on secure employment – especially for younger workers who are watching the dream of a reliable income and holiday pay slip further and further out of reach. These Australians have been the victims of stagnant wages, shameful examples of wage theft and a federal government determined to raid and reduce their superannuation.

The crucial role of unions in our society has been on constant display throughout this pandemic. Labor and the unions have worked constructively with the Morrison Government to guarantee that workers’ rights – and their very jobs – are at the heart of the economic response. Now the Morrison Government is taking advantage of that goodwill by pushing through new legislation that would let businesses use the pandemic as cover to further erode workers’ pay and conditions. This cannot stand.

We’re not just an economy. We’re a society.

Labor’s priority has always been, and always will be, to shape change in the interests of people.
