Nation Building Infrastructure

Roads, ports, public transport airports – we should be a nation that builds things. Just as we all benefit from the streets and highways built by past generations, we all benefit from building infrastructure. Using the power of government, we can transform our economy, revitalise the regions, combat urban congestion and kickstart manufacturing.

Labor's vision:

  1. We need ambitious, nation-building infrastructure projects to kickstart our economy after the coronavirus, such as High Speed Rail.
  2. After almost a decade of scandals like sports rorts, we’ve seen how this government sees infrastructure as pork-barrelling. I see infrastructure as an opportunity for nation-building.
  3. Labor will invest in our energy grid, bringing the power of renewables to consumers and industry. Rewiring the Nation will enable us to power our manufacturing sector with cleaner energy.
  4. The current government is all announcement and no delivery when it comes to infrastructure. Money sits unspent in funds. I’ve got a track record of delivery, and I’m ready to go.

When I was Infrastructure Minister, the government invested more in public transport than the previous 107 years combined.

The details:

Our most iconic infrastructure in Australia has been built after a global crisis – the Great Ocean Road in the wake of World War One, the Sydney Harbour in the middle of the Great Depression.

We need a government with vision. And we need a Labor government to make it happen.

Imagine what High Speed Rail could do to bring our regional communities closer to capital cities. We’d boost business investment, create jobs, and decentralise our country.

We’ve seen a lot of press conferences and media releases from the current government. But not a lot of delivery. All photo op, no follow up.

We know this government can’t be trusted when it comes to building things. They paid $30 million for land that was worth $3 million at Western Sydney Airport.

The current government is plagued by delay, inconsistency, and pork-barrelling in Liberal Party electorates.

Money that’s been announced sits unspent. The National Water Infrastructure Loan Facility, the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility, the Urban Congestion Fund – all big announcements with little to no follow through.

I’ve got a track record of delivery, and I will lead a government ready to start delivering from day one.

We’ll also make sure that one in ten workers on every federal worksite is a trainee, apprentice, or a cadet.
