Labor on National Security

National Security

Labor has always stood up for Australia’s national interest. Australia is the most dynamic region of the world, experiencing the fastest growth of any region in human history. Labor will turn this to our advantage. We will keep our defences strong, treat our defence personnel with respect, and build on the alliances that have kept Australia safe.

A Labor Government will:

  • Deliver a more self-reliant and ambitious foreign policy focused on creating the region we want.

  • Take stock of our forces through a Defence Force Posture Review.

  • Strengthen the global multilateral system, especially on climate change and trade.

  • Support our defence personnel.

Standing up for our interests.

Protecting our national security starts with standing up for our national interests. We will use our deep relationships in the Indo-Pacific to stand on our own two feet and pursue our values in a rapidly-changing region. Competition for influence in our part of the world is intense, and a bigger commitment is needed if we want to avoid becoming a spectator rather than a preferred partner.

Australia as a strong ally and partner.

Labor will deepen our engagement with our closest neighbours. And we will continue the positive progress made through the Quadrilateral consultations with India, Japan and the United States. Labor supports the forging of new arrangements, such as AUKUS.

Climate security.

The changing climate is a risk and an opportunity. The security implications of climate change are clear and cannot be ignored. Australia must listen, show respect, and work with our allies and our Pacific neighbours on issues that are confronting our region, such as climate change – and we will take that same commitment to every international forum where Australia’s voice can be heard. We will join with the world and finally commit Australia to a target of net zero emissions by 2050. And we will make climate change cooperation a hallmark of the US alliance.

Supporting those who serve.

Labor will keep Australia’s defences strong by treating our defence personnel with the respect they deserve. These brave Australians wear the uniform of this country. We must do right by them, especially after they’ve served. Veteran suicide rates are at crisis level in Australia. Labor led the push for a roya

l commission into veteran suicide – to ask the hard questions and, hopefully, to find some answers.

Investing in Australia’s defences.

Over the next decade, there is $270 billion of defence spending on the books. These investments in national security should also deliver a dividend for Australian jobs, training, research and manufacturing. Labor will implement a new strategy creating concrete rules and plans to maximise the use of Australian workers and resources..
