Renewable Energy

Australian can emerge as a winner in a low pollution global economy. We can become a renewable energy superpower – but only with the right leadership. Labor will harness the power of renewables to power our manufacturing, develop our hydrogen industry, and create a generation of jobs.

Labor's vision:

  1. Labor will unleash the power of our solar, hydro and wind power stations by rewiring the nation, building new transmission lines to connect renewables to industry.
  2. We will join with the rest of the world and adopt a target of net zero emissions by 2050 – creating jobs, cutting electricity bills and lowering pollution.
  3. Labor set up the Australian Renewable Energy Agency and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation. The Liberals have spent 7 years undermining them. We’ll support them in government.

The details:

We punch above our weight, but Australia is a relatively small country by global standards. The world is decarbonising. It’s just a fact. And with the right leadership, we can take advantage of that trend.

We might have a small population, but our resources are the envy of the world. Solar, wind, hydro, minerals – we have everything we need right here. We just need leadership.

If we’re not ahead of the curve, we’ll be left behind. Worse, we’ll miss out on all the long term, good-paying jobs that renewables offer.

Just getting to 50 per cent renewable energy at home, and building a hydrogen industry for export, would generate about 87,000 jobs.

Australia has abundant natural resources, and we can use them to power our homes, our businesses and our factories.

We have iron for buildings, copper for wind turbines, lithium for batteries – more than we could ever use in Australia.

Just as coal and iron ore fuelled the industrial economies of the 20th Century, it’s the very minerals and resources Australia has most of that will power the clean economies of this Century.

We could be the land of cheap and endless energy. We could power a strong manufacturing sector. We could export more of the metals, minerals and products that the world is increasingly hungry for.

Back at home, there’s a lot we can do to make energy more affordable. Like the Liberals’ copper-based NBN, our electricity network was designed for a different century.

Labor’s Rewiring the Nation policy is about linking the cheapest new energy source – renewables – to the national grid. The projects have already been identified by the Australian Energy Market Operator, we just need a government ready to give the go-ahead.

This will create thousands of jobs – particularly in regional Australia – and will deliver up to $40 billion in benefits to the economy.

Simply put, the road to a low-carbon future will be paved with clean-energy jobs.
