Tigers Greats Honoured At Leichhardt Oval

Tigers greats Keith Barnes, Wayne Pearce, Paul Sironen, Benny Elias and Garry Jack were honoured tonight with the opening of the Centurions Lounge at Leichhardt Oval.

Federal Member for Grayndler, Anthony Albanese formally opened the Lounge prior to the game between the Tigers and the Sharks.

The Lounge honours all players who have played one hundred first grade games for the Balmain Tigers and Wests Tigers rugby league teams.

It was funded by a $3 million grant from the federal government which helped resurface the playing field and rebuild the dressing sheds as well as construct the Centurions Lounge.

“This work has made the surface of the ground the equal of any in Sydney and the Centurions Lounge makes games at Leichhardt financially viable,” said Mr Albanese.

“The combination has increased the number of games played this year at Leichhardt Oval from three to four. That’s great news for Tigers fans.

“Everyone knows what a great day out Wests Tigers games are for the local community and what a great winning record the team has at Leichhardt Oval.”

Leichhardt Oval has been the home ground of the Tigers since 1943 and Mr Albanese said this investment would keep top level rugby league at the ground for many years to come.

The improvements will also benefit local schools and sporting clubs who use the Oval.

Senator John Faulkner joined Anthony to open the Centurions Lounge at Leichhardt Oval.
