Doorstop Interview Canberra

SUBJECTS: Bushfire condolence motion; National Party leadership spill.

ANTHONY ALBANESE, LEADER OF THE AUSTRALIAN LABOR PARTY: Look, this is a day which Parliament has set aside to deal with a condolence motion for the bushfires, the terrible impact, the loss of life, the loss of property. And what we have here is the most self-indulgent act of the National Party. The Coalition's problem for this Government is that they're too focused on themselves rather than on the Australian people. And today is the ultimate self-indulgence that just reinforces that. This Government needs to actually concentrate on what the Australian people need rather than on itself. It's all about politics.

JOURNALIST: How functional would a Morrison-Joyce Government be?

ALBANESE: This Government is dysfunctional right now. We can see that. This is the first day of Parliament back in the first full year. We had an election last year. And the fact that they're melting down internally just shows that they're not fit to govern, that they're too obsessed by politics. Everything is based upon that focus rather than on the needs of the Australian people.
